Most gardeners try to choose the most ideal from the whole variety of varieties of fruit trees that will satisfy the requirements. For your site, you should rather give preference to already proven crops than to plant an unfamiliar variety, from which it is still unknown what will grow. The apple tree Medunitsa has long passed the test of time, and therefore you can safely buy seedlings and wait for an excellent result.
Description of apple variety Medunitsa
They belong to the summer varieties, they were obtained by crossing the Cinnamon Striped and Wesley. The fruits ripen for a rather long time in comparison with the early Grushovka or the early Kitayka golden: apples are obtained from Medunitsa in the last days of August, while I harvest the crops from the above crops in the middle of the last summer month.
The foliage is dark green in color, oval in shape. The flowers are snow-white, up to 5 cm in diameter. Many owners of this culture especially note the flowering phase, during which the tree looks extremely impressive.
The fruits have an average weight of 100 - 150 g, round shape, yellow-green peel. The pulp has a honey flavor, a high sugar content and a dense juicy texture.
Harvesting can begin in the last days of August, but apples are often consumed unripe, which in no way affects the taste. You can get the first fruits from a planted tree in the third year.
The harvested fruits retain their value for 21 days, which is a feature of most early varieties.
The lungwort is a winter-hardy variety that easily withstands the frosts characteristic of the middle lane. It is noted that in more northern regions, trees may freeze slightly, but with the onset of the warm season, recovery occurs very quickly.
Varietal variety
Before talking about how to plant a crop, the rules for choosing seedlings, care, and more, it is worth mentioning the various varieties of Medunitsa. The high popularity of this particular variety of fruit trees has led to the fact that breeders are working to improve the main indicators.
Summer Medunitsa
The tree is characterized by a tall and spreading crown. Fruit weight reaches 150 g. Apples with green-yellow peel and crimson spots on the sides. The average shelf life of the harvested crop is 1.5 months. From one adult apple tree that has crossed the 5-year-old milestone, up to 80 kg of fruits are obtained, which they begin to collect in late summer - early autumn. The fruit is distinguished by its sweet taste, juicy firm pulp and honey flavor.
Description of the apple tree Winter Medunitsa
She was bred using a summer variety. Fruiting begins at the end of September. The apples themselves practically do not differ from the already described variety, with the exception of the harvest time. One fruit can reach a weight of about 120 g, the taste is not inferior to that of the mother.
Dwarf lungwort
The use of a dwarf rootstock has resulted in trees reaching a height of 2.5 meters, which creates certain convenience during harvesting. The culture begins to bear fruit from 3 years after planting, the first apples appear in the middle of summer.
The mass of one fruit is about 120 g, the color of the peel is yellow-green with crimson stripes, the pulp has a sweet honey taste.
Landing
Medunitsa is one of those varieties that do not need any special growing conditions, but in order to get good yields, a number of factors should be taken into account.
The recommended planting time is autumn, it is best to do this a few weeks before the onset of a cold snap. This time period is necessary for rooting. Additionally, it is recommended that you read the weather forecast and make sure that the temperature will not rise. Otherwise, the tree may begin to move sap, which will lead to the appearance of buds.
In autumn, trees are planted in the following regions:
- Caucasian;
- Privolzhsky;
- Central;
It is best to start planting in October, but gardeners from the Urals, Siberia or the Far East should wait for the onset of spring, so that sudden frosts do not kill young trees, the same applies to regions where a small amount of snow falls.
Seat selection and landing
The apple variety Medunitsa prefers loamy soil, so that the roots of the tree do not sour, it is necessary to make a good drainage system. Another requirement for the soil will be its saturation with useful elements and air conductivity.
When planting several trees, a free space of at least 4 meters is left between them, because fruit crops need sunlight, and the roots should not intertwine with the root systems of other trees.
The landing itself looks like this:
- dig a hole, which should be twice the diameter of the roots. Depth approx. 1 meter:
- a small amount of fertile soil mixed with organic fertilizer must be scattered along the bottom;
- a peg is installed, which will act as a support for the planted tree;
- the seedling is lowered in the center of the poured soil layer, the root system is carefully straightened;
- the roots are covered with earth, the root collar is placed 5 cm above the ground, the earth is carefully rammed;
- formation of an irrigation hole, mulching, watering the seedling with water until the liquid ceases to be absorbed into the soil.
The subtleties of choosing seedlings
It is recommended to choose two-year-old seedlings for planting, which have already acquired three or more shoots and a strong guide. You can also choose an annual tree, if it has a good root system, such seedlings also take root well in a new place.
This procedure is carried out in the spring. Also, before planting, the roots are examined; damaged roots must be removed.
Landing is not always possible immediately after purchase. To preserve the seedling, you need to pack the root system in cellophane, in which several holes have been made, and place the tree in a dark, cool place.
How to care
To get a good harvest, it is recommended to tend the trees all season. Despite the fact that this variety is not picky about the conditions, one should not forget about the elementary rules.
Pruning
Branching begins before the sap begins to move and buds begin to bloom. Every year you need to cut off dried branches, small shoots next to the roots.In order for the crown to form correctly, it is necessary to leave several of the most powerful branches that grow in different directions.
Watering
Any trees need water, Medunitsa is no exception. If the weather is not dry, one watering every 14 days is enough; in extreme heat, more frequent and abundant watering is needed.
For an adult tree, 40 liters of liquid is enough, for an annual one - about 10 liters.
Top dressing
In order for young trees to grow well and actively bear fruit in the future, you need to use urea and fertilizers containing nitrogen. Chicken droppings or nettle tincture can satisfy the apple tree's need for the right ingredient. Top dressing is applied three times during the warm season. Urea is fertilized in May and June; 10 liters of water requires 2 liters of urea.
Superphosphate is used for trees that are already harvesting, the same applies to potassium chloride. After the end of the flowering phase, it is not recommended to use nitrogen-containing fertilizers, otherwise, instead of ovaries, the apple tree will use all its strength to form leaves.
About diseases and pests
The lungwort belongs to varieties that are not very susceptible to diseases of a fungal nature, and many pests also bypass the tree. However, if conditions are unfavorable, diseases can still affect the fruit crop. To prevent unpleasant consequences, it is recommended to carry out prevention.
In the spring, before the buds bloom, copper sulfate is used in the form of a solution for treating trees. You can also use elderberry broth, leaves or flowers are used for cooking, after insisting for 24 hours, you need to add laundry soap in the amount of 50 g.
Ammonium nitrate and Bordeaux liquid help protect the tree from fruit rot and scab.
Processing must be done prior to the beginning of the flowering phase.
